Prague is one of those towns, like Paris or Vienna, that is known for its cafe culture. A town where the intellegentsia and artists have met around marble topped tables to smoke cigarettes, debate and discuss politics, and to be in the company of compatriots. This particular cafe was a favorite haunt during the time of the Velvet Revolution. There was no compatriot for me to meet, so instead I took my copy of Ignorance to read while enjoying a hot Chocolate Savoy and the beautiful scenery of the cafe. Opened in the late 1800s, and made over in 2001 and again in 2004, this cafe exudes the old world bistro elegance with a modern yet classic Czech menu. The classic restored ceiling is a masterpiece of trompe l’oeil painting and intricate plasterwork. The windows are large and if there is no book handy, the people watching is just as good.
