Walk down almost any street in Prague it’s hard to decide what to look at first – the playful pastel colors of the buildings, the people walking down the street, the landscape, the lilacs, or, the sidewalks.
The rain had washed the dirt off of the cut stone that was set in patterns along the street. The rain water had turned the dry grey and dusty rose color of the brick to a wet rich black and dark pink.

Each of the bricks in these patterned sidewalks were laid by hand. A bricklayer worked on his hands and knees, placing each brick and then with a hammer tapped it into place. Once the bricks were in place, the sidewalk was covered in sand which would, sooner or later, find its way into the cracks between the stones to fill up the spaces between.
Not all sidewalks in Prague are made in this traditional way, but many of them still are, especially in the old parts of town.
