All over Prague you will find wonderful things to purchase as souvenirs of your trip. Bohemian glass, red garnets, postcards, and nesting dolls to create memories of the day you bought them.
But there are other kinds of souvenirs. The ones you pick up, knowingly or unknowingly, as you walk through your days. A rock off of the street. A flyer for a concert that you saw. A napkin with the name of a cafe.
As I walked the streets of Prague it was that time of year when winter had melted away and spring was beginning to bloom. As I walked the streets of Prague that spring, I was confronted by smells and things that reminded me of my childhood. My souvenirs were in the moment.
But when I got back from my trip and started going through the papers and receipts and crap that I had brought back with me, I found two things, that to this day, make me remember the moment and the city at the time I found them.
One was a napkin from the Cafe Louvre. You might be able to see it on one of the rotating photos on the front page of this section. It reminds me immediately of the experience of being there, and of the cake and the tea that I had that afternoon. It reminds me of a moment when I took a break from the streets of Prague and went to a place where I could relax.
The other was a lilac flower that I had picked and tucked away into a page of my guidebook. I can still take the dried bloom out from between the pages of that book, close my eyes and sniff, and I am back in Petrin Park, at a time when the entire city was beginning to smell of the wonderful purple flower.
What is your favorite souvenir of Prague that you did not purchase?
